My Baby is Sick

At the beginning of December, I decided to start Grady on rice cereal. I tried it on and off for about 5 days. Around that time, he started to get red rashy cheeks so I stopped the food as I wasn't sure if this could be an allergic reaction. Grady's doctor said that the red cheeks were probably just from the change to cold weather and I should continue with rice cereal or even baby oatmeal and then slowly bring in other foods.

However, because of the busy holidays, I decided to wait and start him again after Christmas. So, last week, I gave him baby oatmeal, as the rice cereal seemed to be a little constipating for him. I fed him the oatmeal at dinner time on Tuesday and Wednesday, but almost immediately he started to poop more frequently and he developed instant diaper rash. He has never screamed from wiping his little bum before this. He also began developing cold symptoms around this time. I stopped the oatmeal right away as I figured his system couldn't handle it...or again perhaps an allergic reaction?? I also assumed things would go back to normal after a couple of days.

Well, it has now been a week since I first gave him oatmeal. He is pooping up to 10+ times a day...basically every diaper and more!!!! His little rear is on fire. We have always had to use gentle baby formula with him as he had gas problems with regular milk based formulas, but now I decided to switch to lactose free formula to see if that helps. We saw the doctor yesterday and she says that it's "mystery poop". She doesn't think it is from the lactose, but said to stick with the lactose free for now anyway. She seems to think that this is just a symptom of the cold bug he has. The cold by the way has become increasingly worse. Until yesterday, it was mainly just a running, snotty nose. Now, it is less of a snotty nose and now is a persistent cough that causes him to gag. It is worse at night so I brought him into our bed to sleep last night at 2:30 so I can prop him up when he starts having a coughing fit. He had about 3 attacks between 2:30 and 7. I feel SO bad for him. He hasn't had a fever and seems happy most of the time, but his sleep is being disrupted (as well as ours, but then again, he wasn't sleeping through the night before this anyway!!!). I'm hoping the cold is starting to take its course. Maybe it started as a head cold and snotty nose and now it’s in is chest and it will soon clear up completely...eliminating the bowel issues at the same time!! I hope this is the case. If not and things don't change, then next week we will head back to the doctor.

A few positive updates, Grady has gained over a pound since his 4 month check up just 3 weeks ago and now weights 17 pounds 5 ounces (the frequent BMs aren't causing a weight loss yet!). He's a BIG boy! He is also starting to sit up on his own and rolls all around the living room when we put him down to play!
